With children as young as five and six beginning to access the internet at home it is important that both parents and teachers begin to cover the safety issues and help them. However, talking about this issue with pupils at this age requires care. On the one hand it is important not to inadvertently advertise the dangers or cause fear or anxiety, yet it is important to ensure that young children do understand the issues of personal safety online as well as the wider issues such as reliability of information and copyright, etc.
On this CD there is a special module which teachers can use when running a session on e-safety in a primary school. Using the five Childnet SMART tips the topic is introduced by ten-year-old Ben, who outlines the SMART rules in a positive, memorable and engaging way which young children will find appealing. The section also includes the BBC ‘Dongle’, cartoon which also uses the SMART rules and will help reinforce the information Ben has given. This content could be presented to a whole class through a whiteboard or projector or could be given out for pupils to go through independently or in small groups. Childnet has also produced further resources for primary schools, including:
One of the most popular activities to reinforce the SMART rules is to encourage pupils to make their own SMART poster. View examples of children’s work.
Becta has also produced its special Internet Proficiency Scheme for Key Stage 2, which is free to all primary schools and consists of a pack of teaching resources and an accompanying cybercafe. The pack can be downloaded from Gridclub.
Becta has also produced ‘Signposts to Safety’, which contains background information, advice and guidance for teachers relating to safety issues and signposts appropriate opportunities within the ICT, PSHE and Citizenship curricula where internet safety messages can be taught. Additionally it signposts free online teaching resources, to help support lessons, from a range of organisations. There are two separate versions for primary and secondary phases.
