Keyboard access keys and navigation aids

This web version of the resource uses the UK Government standard access keys system. The following information shows each of the keyboard shortcut commands available to you. It is intended to aid users who have difficulty in using pointing device (e.g. a mouse) or who prefer to navigate using keyboard shortcuts.

Browser access key combinations

The key combinations that you use is dependant on the type of browser and operating system that you use. Below is a list of the most common. If your browser or operating system is not listed, please refer to your documentation for help with this.

Windows internet Explorer (v5+) Hold down the ALT key, press the access key, release both keys then press the ENTER key
Windows Firefox, Netscape (v7+), Mozilla Hold down the ALT key and press the access key
Windows Opera (v7+) Hold down the SHIFT key and press ESCAPE, release both keys, then press the access key
Mac OS Safari, Firefox, Mozilla, internet Explorer (v5+), Netscape (v7+), Omniweb, Camino Hold down the CTRL key and press the access key
Mac OS Opera (v7+) Hold down the SHIFT key and press ESCAPE, release both keys, then press the access key

The list below uses the word 'Alt' for brevity. You should use the appropriate key combination listed above for your browser.

Tab key navigation

You can also use the Tab key on your keyboard to move between links on a page. A single press of a Tab highlights the next link, while Shift+Tab highlights the previous link. The enter key will open the selected link

Cascading Style Sheets

This web based version of the resource uses cascading style sheets (CSS) for visual layout. Users can turn style sheets off or assign their own within their browser preferences. If your browser or browsing device does not support style sheets at all, the content of each page is still readable.

Text size and fonts

It uses only relative font sizes, compatible with the user-specified "text size" option in visual browsers. If you wish to increase the size at which the text is displayed, you can do this by simply adjusting the browser settings. The text size tool is available in the menu of different browsers as follows

Links

Many links have title attributes which describe the link in greater detail, unless the text of the link already fully describes the target (such as the headline of an article). Links are written to make sense out of context.

Accessibility standards - WAI compliance

This web version of the resource has been designed to conform to the WAI AAA rating where HTML is used. Where documents are made available in other formats, conformance has not been achieved.
